Welcome
to the website of the Glocester Land Trust.
This site was created in April 2008 and is now under construction.
CHEPACHET, RI -- On May, 2, 2009, the Glocester Land Trust held a sign dedication
ceremony for the new Prospect Hill Farm Wildlife Preserve across from 315 Chestnut
Hill Road.
The Glocester Land Trust recently acquired 50 acres of woodland in Chepachet to create the Prospect Hill Farm Wildlife Preserve and further its goal of protecting over 2,000 acres of open space in the town of Glocester. With the cooperation of Glocester residents Robert and Lois Hawksley, the R.I. Department of Environmental Management, and The Nature Conservancy, the Land Trust was able to acquire this property, which was once part of the Prospect Hill Farm operated by the Hopkins family. Located on the western shore of Smith & Sayles Reservoir, the property contains stands of mature hemlocks, oaks, maple, ash and hickory, and geological features ranging from rocky outcrops to gently sloping terrain. Biologists with the Department of Environmental Management have determined that the over half-mile length of shoreline hosts increasingly rare and valuable wildlife habitats.
Prospect Hill Farm Wildlife Preserve is adjacent to the Glocester Land Trust’s 62-acre Hopkins Woodland. Public access to these properties will be via Sand Dam Road off of Chestnut Hill Road. In the coming years, walking and bridle trails will be created on the properties for the public to enjoy their natural scenic beauty.
The Glocester Open Space
bond, the R.I. Department of Environmental Management Open Space bond, and The
Nature Conservancy provided funding for the Prospect Hill Farm acquisition.
Sprague
Farm is our largest and most popular property and has miles of trails. Whether
you have 30 minutes or several hours, there is a trail for you to enjoy. Just
print out the easy-to-follow Trail Map and come out to Sprague Farm on Pine
Orchard Road, which is two miles west of Chepachet village.
All the trails are easy to walk. You don't need any special clothing, just wear
sturdy comfortable walking shoes or preferably lightweight hiking boots. The
Trail Description has three walks: a 1/2 mile walk which takes 30 minutes, a
1 mile walk of 1 hour, and a 2.5 mile walk of 2 hours. Each walk takes a different
trail.
Please note that deer hunting season at Sprague Farm starts on October 1st. During hunting season (Oct 1 to Jan 31) we recommend that you wear a day-glow/safety orange hat and vest. Basically the hunting season is Archery from Oct 1 to Jan 31, Muzzle Loading weapons in November, and Shotguns in December.
Sprague Farm, and all Land Trust properties, are open year 'round from dawn to dusk.
